One of the Single Best Movie Scenes of All Time - Running on Empty - 1988 - Christine Lahti - Steven Hill - Sidney Lumet

Because this film gives a face, a human face, to the last remnants of the Vietnam War Era in America, this film has never been given its true due.

The one scene with Christine Lahti having a brief clandestine reunion with her establishment father chokes me in the throat and wells me up with tears in my eyes every time I see it. It is the single most powerful scene I can remember in cinema. It is truly one of the ten great scenes of all time in Cinema History. Stephen Hills's subtle, uptight, stone faced performance is a mask we can see through full of its anger, confusion and hidden emotion. It leads the whole scene. Christine Lahti truly deserves an Oscar in Retrospect from the Academy.
